Dr. TIMOTHY TIMKO FROM THE USA AND INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGISTS OF TYUMEN CARDIOLOGY CENTER PERFORM JOINT OPERATIONS

Three patients from Tyumen and one patient from Noyabrsk were operated on. There were three scheduled operations and an emergency one performed on the patient from Tyumen who had been brought to hospital in a grave condition with acute myocardial infarction.

Mikhail V. Semukhin, MD, an interventional cardiologist at the Cath lab of Tyumen Cardiology Center, who took part in the operation, noted: “Using percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) in patients with acute myocardial infarction helps to quickly restore blood flow to the heart muscle and reduce its necrotic zone. Besides, using angioplasty reduces risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart rhythm disturbances and many others. PTCA in patients with acute myocardial infarction has been showed to reduce hospitalization period. These patients recover and return to work faster than those whom this operation has not been done. Moreover, the procedure has a long-lasting effect.”

The other three operations with the use of PTCA and coronary stenting were performed on the patients with coronary artery disease. The way PTCA and stenting are done is the following: a catheter is inserted into a vessel via an introducer, and then by means of the catheter a balloon is delivered into a blocked artery. The balloon is inflated in the artery and atherosclerotic plaques are pressed in the vessel` s walls. After that in the increased vessel a metal cage called a stent is inserted to keep the artery open. Thus, the operation restores blood flow in the artery.  

After the operations, the patients whom they were performed shared their impressions. They said that they had not been afraid to entrust their health to the specialists of Tyumen Cardiology Center and their American colleague Dr. Timko, because they were known to be highly skilled specialists who knew well methods of performing operations on coronary vessels.

It should be added, that the main objective of collaboration between specialists from Tyumen and their foreign colleagues is improvement of medical help rendered to patients who need high-technology treatment.
