Russian-American Symposium “Update in Percutaneous Coronary Interventions in Coronary Artery Disease”

The symposium was held in Tyumen Cardiology Center with active participation of a well-known American interventional cardiologist Dr. Timothy Timko who presided at the meeting. The program of the symposium included lectures and presentations by Dr. Timothy Timko and Russian scientists: Igor. P. Zyrianov, MD, Head, Cath lab, Tyumen Cardiology Center; Alexander G. Osiev, MD, PhD, Head, Center for Endovascular Surgery and Radiodiagnostics, E.N. Meshalkin Research Institute of Blood Circulation Pathology (Novosibirsk); Alexander Yu. Rychkov, MD, PhD, Research Supervisor, Heart Rhythm Disturbances Department, Tyumen Cardiology Center. The main issues of the meeting were concerned with high-technology methods of treating coronary artery disease, a comparison of capabilities of invasive methods with those of conservative treatment. More than 80 attendees - cardiologists and health professionals from towns of the Tyumen region and Omsk, Chelyabinsk, Kurgan, Perm as well - were present at the symposium.

On May 27, 2008 interventional cardiologists of Tyumen Cardiology Center and Dr. Timko performed jointly four operations: three scheduled operations and an emergency one on the patient who had been brought to hospital in a grave condition with acute myocardial infarction.

Timothy Timko is the best friend of Tyumen Cardiology Center since 1995 when during his first visit to Russia he taught our physicians and helped to apply the method of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty and stenting in Tyumen. He performed together with our cardiologists the first ten operations on patients with coronary artery disease. In 1998 he taught in his hospital in the USA future leaders of Russian invasive cardiology on the unique hands-on program “New Techniques in Interventional Cardiology”. At difficult period of new Russian history he regularly provided Tyumen Cardiology Center with supplies for interventional cardiology.
