In 1983 on the initiative of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, the Ministry of Health Care made a decision to establish in Tyumen since the 1st of January, 1984 a cardiology clinic of Tomsk Branch of the All-Union Cardiology Scientific Center of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences.

The founding fathers of the cardiology clinic in Tyumen were outstanding academicians Evgeniy I. Chazov, Rostislav S. Karpov and the first secretary of the Regional Party Committee Gennadiy P. Bogomyakov.

The official opening of the clinic took place on May 21, 1985. It was a big event in the life of both the town and the region. The clinic for 200 beds was supplied with the unique equipment that made it possible to perform different tasks of medical science and provide efficient cardiac care for patients. For example, the labs were equipped with: a high-resolution echocardiograph (“Toshiba”, Japan), a set of monitoring and diagnostic equipment Sirecust, Mingograph (Siemens, FRG), a Gamma Chamber (Technicon, USA), a Holter monitor for continuous 24-hour monitoring of patients with myocardial infarction and arrhythmias (Avionics, USA), and some other equipment.

In December, 1985 by the Council of Ministers` Order the Cardiology Clinic of  Tomsk Branch of the All-Union Cardiology Scientific Center of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, was changed into an independent Branch of the All-Union Cardiology Scientific Center of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. At that time the main directions of scientific activity of Tyumen Branch were established. They were: development, evaluation, and application of effective methods of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in population of the Tyumen region; investigation of peculiarities of cardiovascular system adaptation to local climatic conditions and to work on a rotational basis; and elaboration of scientific grounds for organization of  specialized cardiac care, taking into account special organizational forms of industry and climatic conditions of the region.

In February, 1988 because of the necessity for a fast extension of research in the field of cardiology in the North of the Tyumen region and insufficiency of cardiac care, by the decision of the USSR Ministry of Health Care, the Branch of the All-Union Cardiology Scientific Center of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR was changed into an independent institute and was assigned to the Siberian branch of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. The reorganized institution, called Research Institute of Clinical and Preventive Cardiology, was to become a research coordinator in the North of the Tyumen region.

The decision of the USSR Ministry of Health Care from the 10th of February, 1988 (Resolution No.5-5) and  enactment of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences No.19 from the 13th of January, 1988 (Resolution No.1-23) determined the main scientific directions of the institute which since then have never changed at reorganizations. They are:
-   study of epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases in West Siberia, regarding different climatic, geographic, industrial and social factors;
-   development and application of effective methods of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in the population of the Tyumen region;
-   elaboration of scientific grounds for organization of specialized cardiac care in the Tyumen region.

In 1998 by the decision of the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, the Research Institute of Clinical and Preventive Cardiology was changed into a Branch of the Institute of Cardiology of the Tomsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and was called Tyumen Cardiology Center.

At different times the eminent scientists and directors who contributed a lot to development of science and organization of cardiac care in the region were at the head of the Cardiology Center: A.A. Buganov (1984-1986), Ya. S. Vasiltsev (1986-1988), O.S. Antonov (1988-1991). Since 1991 Vadim A. Kuznetsov, MD, PhD, FESC, FACC, Professor of Cardiology, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, has been the head of the Institution.

Since the very foundation the Cardiology Center has been doing active research studies.  Tyumen Branch of the All-Union Cardiology Scientific Center of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences would take part in realization of national programs and in elaboration of regional ones aimed at the development of health care in the country. As early as in the first years of the institution’s lifetime scientific groups in Novyi Urengoi and Langepas were organized. Their main objective was to discover risk factors of cardiovascular diseases in people employed in work on a rotational basis in hard climatic conditions, and to develop methods for preventing these diseases. Scientists from the All-Union Cardiology Scientific Center of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences jointly with those from the Branch in Tyumen held large workshops on important issues of cardiology.

One of the main directions of the Branch and later of the Institute was the development of the staff. During the lifetime of the institution over 12 Doctors of Medical Science(habilitation degree) and over 40 Candidates of Medical Science (PhD) were prepared in the Cardiology Center.

Special attention has always been paid to facilitating research and development of basically new methods of diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.From 1989 staff members of Tyumen Cardiology Center obtained 17 patents on inventions and three electronic databases were registered (Register of the performed operations of cardiac resynchronisation therapy; Register of the performed operations of transluminal balloon coronary angioplasty; Register of the performed operations of coronary angiography).

In 1988 the first coronary angiography was performed in Tyumen Cardiology Center. In 1995 the first percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty and stenting were performed. Since 1999 the Cardiology Center has taken an active part in Russian and international multicenter trials.

Nowadays Tyumen Cardiology Center is a recognized leader in the field of high-technology cardiology. Regarding the number of angioplasties and stenting procedures performed, it is in the top five among 110 Russian clinics that specialize in the use of catheter techniques.In 2011 Tyumen Cardiology Center won the National Award «Purple Heart» in the nomination Best Cardiology Clinic of the Year in Russia.

Specialists and staff members of the Cardiology Center regularly organize scientific events of regional, national and international scale as well as training workshops, schools, round tables for physicians from the Tyumen region and those adjoining.

During these years the following scientific events were held in Tyumen Cardiology Center: IV International Congresses Cardiology at a Crossroad of Sciences (2010-2013), International Congress on Geriatric Cardiology and Noninvasive Cardiac Imaging (2009), XX Annual International Conferences Cardiology Update (1994-2013), VIII International Symposia of Echocardiography and Vascular Ultrasound (2004-2013), International Course on Transesophageal Echocardiography (2005), Russian National Clinical-Diagnostic Forum of Cardiology (2005), XV World Congress of the International Cardiac Doppler Society in conjunction with the Russian National Conference on Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy and Cardioversion Defibrillation (2006), Scientific Conference Up-to-date Technologies in Prevention of Sudden Death (2008), Russian-American Symposium Update in Percutaneous Coronary Interventions in Coronary Artery Disease (2008); about 130 regional scientific conferences, TV-bridges, round tables, workshops and school for physicians of the city and the region.

In 2004 on the base of Tyumen Cardiology Center the Russian Chapter of the International Society of Cardiovascular Ultrasound was founded (www.iscu.ru). The Director of the Center, Vadim A. Kuznetsov was elected Chairman of its Board.

In 2006 Tyumen Cardiology Center extended its activity over other regions of Russia. Representative offices in Omsk, Nizhnevartovsk, and Chelyabinsk were opened.

Every year the number of high-technology operations made in the Cardiology Center increases as well as a flow of patients from different regions of the country. The institution is being constantly retooled. In 2007 a regular consignment of the newest equipment for diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases was purchased. In January, 2008 a new operating room, the third one, was opened, that made cardiac care available for more people who need it.In 2013 a new electrophysiology/catheterization laboratory outfitted with the most modern angiography equipment started working in the Center.
