Brief biography
In 1984 Ekaterina Akimova graduated from General Medicine Department of Tyumen State Medical University. Since 1985, after her internship, she worked as a therapist of the Outpatient Department, junior scientific researcher, senior scientific researcher and since 1995 she has become the Head of the Laboratory of Epidemiology and Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease of Tyumen Cardiology Research Center. In 2004, Dr. Akimova successfully defended her habilitation thesis in cardiology.
Research interests
Ekaterina Akimova is an author of over 500 research papers, 2 books, 2 manuals, 1 patent on the invention, 1 database which received state registration. Five PhD thesis were prepared and successfully defended under her supervision.
In 1986-1989 Dr. Akimova was responsible for the program on epidemiology of coronary artery disease and its risk factors among the Far north citizens; she organized and held prospective study among males working rotating shifts at the oil producing complex in the Middle Ob region. She was also a responsible researcher for the following studies: «Monitoring of the main cardiovascular diseases and risk factors in the open Tyumen population», «Prevalence of arterial hypertension and the main risk factors to design preventive measures among Tyumen pupils», «Non-conventional risk factors of coronary artery disease, dynamics of it and conventional risk factors in the open male population of Tyumen», «Prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its components in the open Tyumen population, their associations with non-conventional (psychosocial) and behavioral factors in urban Siberian populations».
Achievements, awards, and grants
For long dedicated work in medicine and healthcare, huge contribution to social and economic development of the Tyumen region Ekaterina Akimova was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Department of Education and Science of the region (2006), by the Governor of the Tyumen region (2008), by the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (2011).
Scientific inventions of young scientists guided by E. Akimova received grant support from the Governor of the Tyumen region in 2006 and 2008. In 2014 Dr. Akimova was also a winner of the Russian Society of Cardiology Award for contribution to the performance of prevention programs aimed to decrease of cardiovascular diseases and mortality rate in the Russian Federation.
