Description

From August 31 to September 4, 2019, in Paris (France) the most influential and the world's largest annual scientific summit in cardiovascular medicine - Congress of the European Society of Cardiology was held. This time, it became a special event, as it was organized in conjunction with the World Congress of Cardiology.

More than 33,000 delegates attended this forum, including scientists and physicians of our Center. Tatiana Gizatulina, MD, PhD, Head of the Department of Heart Rhythm Disturbances and Georgiy Pushkarev, MD, PhD, Scientific Researcher of the Laboratory of Instrumental Diagnostics, presented their studies within poster session. Among participants were Marina Bessonova, Acting Director of Tyumen Cardiology Research Center and Natalia Musikhina, MD, PhD, Head of the Department of Urgent Cardiology of the Scientific Division of Clinical Cardiology.

Dr. Gizatulina shared that one of the studies she presented was devoted to prognosticators - predictors for left atrial thrombosis in patients with atrial fibrillation which is a very serious type of arrhythmia, where the risk of stroke is five times higher. The source of stroke is blood clots, usually formed in the left atrial appendage. Using mathematical methods, our experts showed that echocardiography allows, even before transesophageal examination, to reveal signs of changes in the geometry of the heart. The presence of these signs increases the risk of a thrombus in the left atrium by four times.

This year, summit on telemedicine was held for the first time as a part of the Congress. Participants discussed electronic health records, remote monitoring, decision support in the field of artificial intelligence, design of new hospitals, etc. Our scientific researcher, Dr. Pushkarev made an oral presentation on digital technologies in which he and his colleagues were actively engaged in designing a chatbot for patients.

Researches shown that messages received through a smartphone application with the advice of physicians and other information about lifestyle changes can be useful in cardiac rehabilitation. The chatbot created by our team is engaged in sending out such messages. It has additional functions, for example, an individual treatment plan is available for a patient. Patients can fill in an electronic diary and monitor blood pressure, heart rate data and other indicators. Thus, attending physician controls treatment process even remotely. The forum’s digital summit is important, because medicine in general and cardiovascular medicine in particular, are entering a rapidly changing era of innovative digital technologies. The organizers hope that it will become an annual event.

It should be noted that the focus of the congress is issues on global cardiovascular health this year: differences in prevalence, clinical manifestations, prevention strategies, diagnostic methods and treatment of heart diseases. A topic: “Global cardiovascular health” is very relevant for the mission of both our organizations. Forum organizers noted in their welcome message to participants, that thanks to partnership with European Society of Cardiology, we will not only get an idea of the problems associated with cardiovascular diseases in the Member States and membership of ESC, but also get global understanding of health problems affecting the whole world.

Next year the European Congress of Cardiology (ESC) will celebrate its 70th anniversary. It will be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in September.
