On the occasion of the 85th anniversary of R.S. Karpov, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, founding father of the Tyumen Cardiology Research Center

R.S. Karpov is Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, leading Russian scientist-therapist-cardiologist, who has received well-deserved recognition in Russia and abroad. Dignified school of life, rich experience in medical, scientific and pedagogical activities, wise guidance and mentoring: serving the good, advanced ideas of medical science and healing, his patients, students and colleagues have lied behind him for more than 60 years. The name of Rostislav Sergeevich is associated with the development of cardiology in Siberia and the formation of one of the largest research institutes in Russia.

He was born in 1937 in Tomsk in a family of lecturers of Tomsk Medical Institute. His father, Sergei Petrovich Karpov, Academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, was an outstanding scientist, the founder of the Siberian School of Microbiologists and Virologists. Maria Ivanovna, mother, was working as Associated Professor of the Department of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases. In 1960, Rostislav Sergeevich graduated with honors from Tomsk Medical Institute with General Medicine Degree and was working at his Alma Mater, having gone the way from a resident doctor to the Head of the Department (1979-2018) of therapeutic faculty with a course of clinical pharmacology in Siberian State Medical University.

Since 1980, his professional activity has been closely interconnected with Cardiology Research Institute, which was formed with his direct participation, as Siberian branch of the All-Union Cardiology Research Center of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (now Cardiology Research Institute of Tomsk NRMC). There, Rostislav Sergeevich began as Deputy Director for Research (1980-1985), for 30 years he was all-time leader (1985-2015);from June 30, 2015 to the present, he has been working as a Scientific Supervisor of the institute. Despite being extremely busy at administrative position, he headed the Department of Atherosclerosis and Chronic Coronary Heart Disease for many years (1980-2019) and never stopped practicing clinical medicine.

Career path of R.S. Karpova is incredible example of selfless service to science and medicine, commitment to a cause, love for people, sincere reverence for his Teacher and immense gratitude to him. Even now, Academician Dmitry Dmitrievich Yablokov remains for Rostislav Sergeevich as an example to follow in many fields: attitude to life, work, people and, moreover, his patients; he mentally synchronizes difficult and important decisions and ongoings of his life with Academician Yablokov`s point of view.

Scientific works of R.S. Karpov, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences are aimed to solve the most complicated socially significant problems of modern medicine; he is the author of more than 1000 scientific studies, including 38 monographs, 43 patented inventions. His main research interests are rheumatology, cardiology, clinical pharmacology, clinical and population epidemiology. R.S. Karpov brought up more than one generation of physicians and scientists: 42 doctoral and 81 master's theses were completed and defended under his supervision.

Problem-oriented research areas, reasonable personnel policy, high professionalism and exactingness, large cooperation with Russian and foreign colleagues allowed the scientific school of RAS Academician R.S. Karpov to take one of the leading places among Russian research institutions on issues of cardiology, as well as to gain indisputable scientific authority among Russian and foreign specialists. Continuing the glorious activities and traditions of his teachers and predecessors, he was able to increase scientific potential of Siberian science, achievements of which are known all over the world today.

Professor Karpov is also known as a major organizer in science and healthcare. With his direct involvement, Cardiology Research Institute in Tomsk, Tyumen Cardiology Center - a branch of Tomsk NRMC, Tomsk Scientific Center of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences were established. He was one of the initiators of the foundation of Tomsk NRMC. Under his leadership, the first cardiological outpatient early treatment center of Transurals region was opened in Tomsk; for the first time in Russia, a model of a portable automated consultative and diagnostic center based on the motor ship "Kardiologist" was developed to provide cardiac care to Siberian region population, which scattered around; arrhythmological centers network was formed in regions of Siberia and the Far East . He is the author of specialized cardiological care for children in Siberia: the first department of pediatric cardiology was opened at Cardiology Research Institute in Transurals region.

Rostislav Sergeevich Karpov involves in a lot of social work. For many years (2003-2019) he worked as Chief External Expert in cardiology of Siberian Federal District. He is a member of the editorial board of more than twenty scientific journals, editor-in-chief of the scientific and practical peer-reviewed medical Siberian Journal of Clinical and Experimental Medicine. He is a member of the Presidium of the Board of the Russian Society of Cardiology, Russian Medical Society on Arterial Hypertension, Chairman of the Tomsk Branch of Russian Society of Cardiology, Chairman of the Dissertation Council on the basis of Tomsk NRMC in specialties: "cardiology" and "radiation diagnostics" (medical sciences).

His professional and social activities have been marked by numerous awards at various levels.
A man with breadth of knowledge and erudition, an outstanding intellect, an active life position, he continues to work today for the benefit of people's health. Professionalism, complete dedication to work, benevolence and exactingness; Rostislav Sergeevich generously shares these and other professional and human qualities with his colleagues and students.
