EuroPrevent 2019 - the annual congress of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC) was held in Lisbon from 11 to 13 April 2019. Our scientists Nina P. Shurkevich, MD, PhD, Leading Scientific Researcher and Georgiy S. Pushkarev, MD, PhD, Scientific Researcher made several poster presentations.
The main topic discussed at the congress was preventive methods: prevention of serious cardiovascular complications, reducing risk factors and their appearance.
The scientists told how the environment may influence on CV health. It is known that pollution adversely affects general health. Researchers have investigated which aspects of air pollution cause harm and found an effect of microparticles. There is also the possibility that high noise levels, such as from aircraft, may also be associated with sleeping disturbances, which in turn may lead to an adverse effect on vasculature and endocrine function.
Researchers also investigated whether contaminated air negates the benefits of outdoor sports. In general, only when pollution is very severe it will outweigh the positive aspects of exercising outdoors.
Dr. Shurkevich presented three poster presentations: “Hyperplastic alterations of heart and vessels in the Arctic watch”, “Influence of low physical activity on arterial hypertension and life quality in the Far north watch”, “Abdominal obesity as a risk factor for comorbidity progression in patients with arterial hypertension”.
She told: “Patients with arterial hypertension have target organ lesion, particularly thickening of carotid artery and heart wall, however, patients with arterial hypertension in the Arctic watch in comparison with Tyumen patients with arterial hypertension (if their blood pressure is conceded to be equal) have these symptoms advanced more and even healthy people in the Arctic watch begin to have such symptoms. Thus, our researches showed, that it is relevant not only to blood pressure level in vascular and heart remodeling.”
Dr. Pushkarev noted: “The primary prevention is the most important aspect: overcoming addictions, sporting activities, proper nutrition, changing the lifestyle as a whole. Expenses for cardiovascular diseases treatment are quite high in Europe, but situation has not changed a lot. Hence, prevention helps to save lives and costs. There were few new researches for us. We have investigated all the problems presented at the congress: analyzing patient`s physical activity after coronary interventions, researching the effect of patient`s type D personality on mortality, developing the risk assessment scale of population and many others.”
It should be mentioned that 1200 cardiologists, general practitioners, basic scientists and young researchers from 50 countries, 165 international experts presented 800 abstracts at 60 scientific sessions.
