From March 27 to April 1, 2019, physicians and scientists from branches of Tomsk NRMC RAS: “Tyumen Cardiology Research Center” and Research Institute of Medical Genetics have examined indigenous small-numbered peoples of the Far North in Tazovskiy settlement (Yamal-Nenets autonomous district).

Specialists have studied reasons for developing of arterial hypertension and atherosclerosis, delivered lectures and called consiliums with the Far North colleagues.

The physicians were inspecting men and women aged 35-59 at the base of Central District Hospital of Tazovskiy settlement for almost a week.

The working group from Tyumen Cardiology Center consisted of Aleksandr S. Vetoshkin, MD, PhD, functional and ultrasound diagnostics specialist, Senior Scientific Researcher of Arterial Hypertension and Coronary Insufficiency Department of Scientific Division of Clinical Cardiology, he fulfilled Doppler ultrasound of brain magistral and femoral arteries; Nina P. Shurkevich, MD, PhD, cardiologist, Leading Scientific Researcher consulted patients and controlled their examination; Ani A. Simonyan, cardiologist carried out a questionnaire and EСG; Elena I. Yaroslavskaya, Leading Scientific Researcher did echocardiographic screening.

Obligatory collection of blood was carried out to determine lipid profile, biomarkers of inflammation, fibrosis, heart failure in all participants. Blood samples were collected also for genetic researches – these data will be analyzed by experts of Tomsk Research Institute of Medical Genetics. Within a business trip, two lectures were delivered to the Central District Hospital and Emergency Medicine physicians: “Therapy of arterial hypertension: what do recommendations keep silent about?” and “The high-risk patient. Components of successful therapy”. What is more, physicians called consiliums, examined complex patients, gave recommendations on their treatment and tactics of management.

“We consider, that our goal has been achieved during the business trip, - Nina P. Shurkevich mentioned, - we are processing and analyzing results of study at the present time. The most important thing we have found out is that the indigenous peoples of Tazovskiy settlement need cardiological check-ups. There is no a full-time cardiologist in spite of decent technical equipment. We are glad to support by organization these expeditions at least. We will continue to work actively together”.
“It should be told, that morbidity of such diseases as obesity, arterial hypertension in the examined Arctic tundra inhabitants occurred as not so high as in inhabitants of the south region areas - these are, ultimately, so called, “diseases of civilization”, but “people of nature”, as they call themselves, have different everyday life conditions and heavy manual labor. Most of the examined people are reindeer breeders and it took some of them three days to get to Tazovskiy settlement”, - Elena I. Yaroslavskaya told.
It should be mentioned that the North expeditions and work with Yamal inhabitants are one of the main scientific directions of our research center. Our specialists have already held such medical mission trips for many years, which promote the development of treatment and prevention programs for patients, living permanently in the Northern regions or doing shift work there.
