Tyumen Cardiology Research Center has concluded cooperation agreement with Tyumen Industrial University (TIU). It has been known beforehand, that research group of our physicians and scientists and TIU specialists of Marketing Department and Department of Municipal Administration will carry out the analysis of health condition and ways of its preservation in workable men, employed at shift form of work in gas producing and other companies of the Arctic region. Specialists will develop scientific measures; prepare collective monographs and scientific articles.

The results of variety studies have an evidence, that shift workers are experiencing the effects of both somatic and social risk factors in the districts of the Far North. In the frame of prevention program in order to influence these factors it is necessary to possess complete and reliable analytic database.

Tyumen Cardiology Research Center has unique information over the past 35 years, when gas development was carried out in different social and economic conditions in Novyi Urengoy. During the establishment of our medical center (1986-1987), scientists were organizing expeditions to gas fields of the Arctic Circle areas to examine health of workable men, employed at shift form of work. These results now are going to be used for monitoring the situation regarding the cardiovascular diseases and risks factors and study these indicators at new working conditions of shift workers and according to length of work experience.

Ekaterina V. Akimova, MD, PhD, Head of the Laboratory of Epidemiology and Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease mentioned that the trigger of cardiovascular disease development is stress, which shift workers feel. Primarily, it negatively affects cardiovascular system: diseases of heart and blood vessel develop in severe forms. Risk factors (intensive smoking, overweight are the cause of irrational nutrition and sedentary lifestyle) are getting worse due to increasing length of work experience. The number of patients with myocardial infarction grows depending on the occupancy duration in the Far North, but mortality from coronary artery disease significantly increases after over a decade of living in The North.

“Tyumen Cardiology Research Center has been actively participating in this project, which gives an opportunity to investigate the health condition of such a group as shift workers. We have agreed to cooperate, been developing a collaborative scientific instrumentation. Our colleagues from Tyumen Cardiology Research Center are interested in medical aspects as physicians. In our turn, we are interested in social issues relating to health from living conditions management perspective.” - Anatoliy Silin, PhD in Sociology, Professor, Senior Scientific Researcher of Marketing and Municipal Administration Department of TIU, explained.

Collaboration between physicians, who will study medical aspects, and specialists on social issues relating to health from living conditions management perspective, will help to achieve set goals. It should be mentioned, that the Arctic research study is the one of the fundamental scientific themes of Tyumen Cardiology Research Center for the period 2022-2030.
