Children Congenital Heart Disease Treatment and Observation Possibility Discussed at Tyumen Cardiology Research Center

Parents asked questions about medical and social assessment and benefits, children’s rehabilitation, sanatorium-and-spa treatment. The meeting was very informative: Tatyana Chernysheva, head of Tyumen Cardiology Research Center children consultative department, touched upon some interesting topics during her speech.

It is generally assumed that congenital heart disease (CHD) is inherited, but it is not true. According to the statistics, only 5-8% of children inherit CHD, while the most common CHD reasons are:

1. Viral infections mother got during the first trimester of pregnancy;

2. Nicotine addiction;


3. Self-treatment;

4. Giving birth to profoundly premature and morphologically immature children;

5. Ecology deterioration.

In last 10 years diagnostics level got higher so it ensures birth retention of children with CHD in one in 100 families: theoretically, up to 85% of such diseases are diagnosed in the intrauterine period during ultrasonic scanning, but in practice, according to L.A. Bokeria, in Russia it makes only 18-20%. Both in Tyumen and in Russia they register interventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, patent ductus ateriosus, coarctation of aorta, Fallot’s tetrad.

According to the latest data, there are 1196 children with CHD in Tyumen. One hundred and twelve of them are disabled and need rehabilitation and cardiologist’s observation. After the surgery other children, thanks to modern technologies and our doctors, differ in no way from the ones who never had it. Some of them even go in for sports and earn medals.

Parents took children to the meeting, so while they were talking to the specialists, boys and girls helped the Fixies do some exercises, plunged into a huge soap bubble and got presents from balloons. Watching these children, one could never think they are ill or disabled.
