Smoking is one of the main risk factors of coronary artery disease. In their research scientists of Tyumen Cardiology Research Center analyzed the influence of smoking parents and other relatives on the teenagers’ bad habit.
A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted using a questionnaire and blood pressure measurement. 1596 Tyumen students aged 12 – 17 years were involved in the study. Ekaterina Gakova, Senior Scientific Researcher of Laboratory of Epidemiology and Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases told, ‘The results we have got were the following: fathers smoke in almost 40% of cases, mothers – in almost 40% of cases, about 7% of the students have a brother or a sister smoking, in 5% of cases other relatives smoke. More than 50% of smoking family members create conditions for passive smoking. 22% of students have a smoking friend.’
Students whose relatives smoke have an active interest to the process and smoke regularly 1,5-2 times more often than their friends from non-smoking families. Smoking morbidity rate is 14 times higher in teenagers having smoking friends.
Thus, scientists discovered the direct connection of parents’ and other relatives’ smoking with an interest and introduction to smoking of a teenager. Besides, there is a direct influence of amount of the smoking relatives on the teenagers’ involvement into smoking. The received data is used to design and implement preventive programs for children.
