Surgeons of X-ray and Endovascular Diagnostics and Treatment Department performed 100 interventions using stents of a new type with a unique feature to dissolve in the artery after some time.
Tyumen Cardiology Center surgeons were one of the first specialists in Russia to perform intracoronary stenting about thirty years ago. The main point of this intervention is to put a metal body (stent) into the damaged vessel delivering blood to the heart (coronary artery). The stent allows a normal bloodflow to get restored, although its replacement and another intervention may be required after some time. Recently experts of one of the leading producers of medical equipment have designed a bioresorbable vessel body which completely dissolves after restoration of arteries’ patency and delivery of the drugs to the vessel wall.
Experts explain, ‘This technology gives the same effect as the best medical stents but has one advantage – artery gets restored and returns its biological functions. The body of the innovative stent is made of polyglycolic acid and it is quite hard but flexible, repeats the form of the arteries and does not straighten the vessel despite its metal variant.’
Technology of installation of bioresorbable stents is the same as of typical bodies and does not require any special skills of a surgeon. Intervention lasts from 20 minutes till an hour and a patient has regional anaesthesia, thus he is awake and can communicate with a surgeon. The bandage is removed the next day already and a patient is allowed to walk. He can return to his normal lifestyle in the nearest future and continue working. Decision which stent to install – a metal one or a bioresorbable one – is taken during the intervention. The price of this procedure is between 150 and 200 thousand roubles. However such kind of interventions may be performed as a national guarantee – free for the patient.
