On April 11 the first Chess Championship among the pensioners took place in Tyumen Cardiology Center. The event was organized by Tyumen Regional Chess Federation, Union of Pensioners of the Tyumen region, City Chess Club and Cardiology Center.

Gennadiy Shanturov, President of Tyumen Regional Chess Federation noted that the idea to hold this championship appeared after the official visit of Anatoliy Karpov, deputy of the State Duma and 16-time World Chess Champion, to Tyumen Cardiology Center in March.

At the ceremonial opening of the first in the city Chess Championship among the pensioners Nina Polovnikova, Chairperson of Tyumen region Union of Pensioners, highlighted, ‘We are against lying in bed and moving is the most important thing in our everyday lives. While a man is thinking, using his logics, he will stay alive. We have wonderful examples of this way of lifestyle. For instance, today the oldest participants of the Chess championships are of 88 and 86 years old.’

Thus, under the motto ‘Never a moment’s peace’ an active fight for the winning places was ongoing for 6 hours. Competitors agreed that this sport helps to keep their hearts healthy.
Vladimir Putin proposed to declare 2015 the year of fighting with cardiovascular diseases. Gennadiy Shanturov promised that checkers and domino championships are going to be held this ‘heart’ year.
