On March 4, 2015 scientific conference “Innovations in medicine: interdisciplinary approach” took place in Tyumen Cardiology Center. Specialists fr om Australia and Saint-Petersburg performed results of their latest researches to Tyumen cardiologists, endocrinologists and neurologists.

Professor Markus Schlaich, Head of Hypertension & Kidney Disease Department from St. Vincent’s Hospital (Australia) delivered the presentation wh ere great attention was paid to the vital importance of the role of sympathetic nervous system. He also emphasized the importance to consider all mechanisms causing arterial hypertension. “Arterial hypertension is also called a silent murder,” Prof. Schlaich pointed out. “Every third person has a risk for blood pressure elevation. It`s closely connected with psychological and emotional stress, socio-economic problems and lifestyle.” He reminded about the research “How stress influences cardiovascular death rate” conducted during the FIFA World Football Cup in 2006 in Germany. It showed that at the most tense game moments (penalty series, defeat of the favorite team) hospitalization cases and cardiovascular death rate rapidly increase among the fans. That was a further proof of the fact that frequent stress and emotional load are the major risk factors for heart diseases.

“The most affordable prevention methods are regular exercises and good nutrition. That is the difficulty! The majority of patients fail to follow these recommendations. When patient’s health requires taking medication, doctors often face the problem that according to the statistics only 25-30% of patients heed their physicians` orders. There are several reasons why people are not able to take their medicine as directed – including forgetfulness, no will, no motivation, and cost of medicines. In this situation a doctor should explain what significant consequences non-adherence may lead to.” – Dr. Schlaich clarified. - “In the most complicated cases cardiologists use modern interventional technologies, including denervation of the renal arteries. This technology is used to selectively calm hyperactive renal nerves, leading to a reduction in the kidneys’ production of hormones that raise blood pressure.” Tyumen Cardiology Center has recently applied this method but the first results proving its efficiency have been already received.

A guest from Saint-Petersburg, Elena Baranova, MD, PhD, Professor of Faculty Therapy Department, informed the participants of the conference about the rules to follow when treating arterial hypertension in pregnant women and young people. “Nowadays «masked» or «hidden» arterial hypertension is rapidly developing,”- Prof. Baranova highlighted. – “It occurs when out-of-clinic blood pressure readings are higher than measurements taken in the clinic – generally at home or at work. And of course it is closely connected with stresses: night shifts, change workplace, high responsibility, high decision-making speed, etc.” Elena is sure that in case of treating patients with high or extremely high cardiovascular risk it is important to prescribe drug therapy immediately. It is worth reminding that arterial hypertension is one of the most common diseases and does not reveal within a long period of time. The disease is dangerous due to its complications, including strokes and other deep vessel defects.
