Revolution in interventional cardiology

Yesterday Oleg I. Volkov, MD, PhD, an expert from Moscow held a lecture and a workshop in Tyumen Cardiology Center. He presented a state-of-the-art bioresorbable coronary stent and informed that unlike conventional metal stents a new bioresorbable stent is completely dissolved in the artery after several months. The stent restores blood flow and support the vessel through the healing process while drug elution influences the vessel wall.

“The technology has the same effect as the best drug-eluting stents but it has also a unique advantage. The artery is restored and repairs its biological functions,” pointed out Dr. Volkov. “The frame of the innovative stent is flexible and hard at the same time; it repeats the edges of the arteries and does not straighten the vessel.”

Head of Department of X-ray and Surgical Methods of Diagnostics and Treatment №1, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, Igor P. Zyryanov assured that the new stent has the same price as drug-eluting stents of the previous generation. Such kind of interventions are performed in Tyumen Cardiology Center as per the federal quota, i.e. free for the patient. “We have already purchased the first 100 stents, they will be installed within the next few months,” Dr. Zyryanov said. About ten patients were sel ected for operations with new stents. Interventional cardiologists Mikhail V. Semukhin and Vitaliy A. Chuvychelov explained all advantages of new technology to patients and having received their approval, performed first implantations under direct consultations of Dr. Volkov. After operations with biostents patients informed that they felt better immediately after the procedure.

We remind that stenting allows treating coronary artery disease that appears due to lack of blood supply to coronary arteries caused by the narrowing of their lumen.

Blood flow restoration takes minimum time (duration of operation is fr om 20 minutes to an hour); 24-hour bed rest is recommended and next day the bandage is removed; patient is allowed to walk. In a few days, a person is coming back to his normal life and can work.
