Few months ago a new method of treatment was applied in Tyumen Cardiology Center for patients with resistant arterial hypertension when blood pressure level remains above the target 140/90 mm Hg despite taking three or more antihypertensive medications. Implementation of renal artery denervation became possible due to innovative equipment that was set at one of operating rooms of Tyumen Cardiology Center last year.
In spite of the fact that the first operations were made several months ago, cardiologists didn’t tell about the innovation – they were waiting for the first results, ready to be presented officially today. “People with arterial hypertension usually have increased renal nerve activity, by which blood pressure rises even more, as well as risk of heart’s, kidneys’ and blood vessels’ further damage, - N.Yu. Savelyeva, cardiologist of higher category told us. – In renal denervation procedure a technique of selectively quieting hyperactive renal nerves is used. This causes a reduction in the kidneys’ production of hormones that raise blood pressure.”
The prevalence of arterial hypertension nowadays rises worldwide; high blood pressure is a serious condition that can lead to heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, coronary heart disease and other health problems. An even slight reduction in systolic blood pressure may reduce mortality rates in patients with arterial hypertension. That is why it is important to work for seemingly insignificant numbers. All patients after renal denervation demonstrated a significant drop in blood pressure (-20-30 mm Hg) during the next month. These may be considered as promising results, because in many other cases the first effect can only be seen after a year of treatment,” – Nina Savelyeva resumed. Thus the new technology helps not only to drop high blood pressure but to reduce the amount of drugs taken.
However, not all patients with arterial hypertension need this procedure. First of all it is important to exclude secondary causes of arterial hypertension, make sure - whether or not the patient is taking all the prescribed medicine, if there are no problems with the kidneys, etc.
To the present Tyumen cardiologists have already performed 16 renal denervations.
