Lyudmila Gapon: medicine is a lifestyle, craft and vocation for me

On October 16 the staff of Tyumen Cardiology Center congratulated Lyudmila I. Gapon, Head of Scientific Division of Clinical Cardiology of Tyumen Cardiology Center, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Professor, distinguished cardiologist, talented teacher, wise mentor and nice person on her anniversary.


Lyudmila Gapon has been working in Tyumen Cardiology Center since its foundation. Due to her outstanding contribution, superior intellect and talent, nationally and internationally recognized scientific school investigating all aspects of arterial hypertension including fundamental research under the conditions of West-Siberian and the Extreme North regions was founded.
L.I. Gapon told: “I can’t even imagine some other life. I was 13 when I entered the medical college and left home. I have chosen the pharmaceutical department but during the studies I understood that my vocation is treating patients. Therefore after the college I entered the medical department. I remember all my patients. With some of them we are together for more than twenty years, with other we took part in our scientific researches.”
Professor Gapon is a promoter of 9 habilitation and 50 Ph.D. theses: preventive programs, new methods of diagnosis and treatment of arterial hypertension, coronary artery disease and acute coronary syndrome were put into practice. Lyudmila Gapon is the co-author of over 600 publications, printed in Russian and foreign editions including 3 books and 5 patents on the invention.
L.I. Gapon is a talented teacher and an excellent speaker. She tutors trainees, internship and resident doctors, conducts primary training and specialization of cardiologists for practical healthcare of Tyumen region; weekly delivers lectures on actual issues of modern cardiology for medical practitioners of Tyumen and Tyumen region. Prof. Gapon is a honorary lecturer of national and foreign conferences and congresses.
Lyudmila Gapon has many pupils in the department. Irina A. Velizhanina, Head of the Department of Arterial Hypertension told: “Lyudmila Gapon is one of my most respected and beloved persons. We have been working together for 28 years. She is a great specialist, our idea person. She is known in Russia and abroad. We are very proud of working together!”
Director of Tyumen Cardiology Center Professor V.A. Kuznetsov said: “Lyudmila Gapon today is our standard. Scientific, human. A person of exceptional integrity. First and foremost the turbulent 1990s come to my mind, when we traveled to Yamal, did a great job in a week, examined patients with a team of specialists and then the whole Institute lived on earned money for a year. This was such support that we couldn’t survive without.”
In 2012 Lyudmila Gapon was rewarded with “Nikolay Korotkov’s award”, established by the Russian Society of Cardiology, for her outstanding achievements in prevention and treatment of arterial hypertension. Prof. Gapon became the first scientist in the world, who had received this award.
